MasterMinds 2025: The Future of Packaging is Here

July 09, 2025

At MasterMinds 2025, industry leaders showcased how packaging is evolving into a dynamic platform for innovation, sustainability and consumer engagement.

AI is transforming packaging from the inside out. Dr. John Whyte, Chief Medical Officer at WebMD, and Katie King, CEO of AI in Business and author of Using Artificial Intelligence in Marketing, emphasized AI’s role in reducing labeling errors, enhancing traceability and supporting sustainability. In healthcare, smart packaging is enabling real-time health tracking and at-home diagnostics, while voice assistants and chatbots are reshaping how younger consumers interact with brands.

Intelligent packaging is also gaining traction. Peter Bloch, Market Development Manager at Avery Dennison, and Andrew Manly, Communications Director at the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA), highlighted how RFID and digital labels are unlocking real-time tracking, authentication and consumer engagement. With RFID costs dropping and smartphone integration rising, adoption is accelerating. Manly noted that the smart packaging market is projected to grow from $28.4B in 2025 to $67.2B by 2035.

Generational influence is reshaping design. Jon Denham, Chair of SCADpro at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and Sneha Patel, an innovation and design strategy consultant, explored how Gen Z’s demand for sustainability and digital connectivity is pushing brands to adopt eco-friendly materials, minimalistic aesthetics and refillable formats. Printed packaging is now, more than ever, a powerful communication and storytelling tool that blends both physical presence and digital interaction.

From AI-driven personalization to tamper-evident cartons and biohacking wellness kits, packaging is becoming smarter, safer and more sustainable. As these trends continue to gain momentum, brands that embrace innovation will lead the next era of consumer connection.
