About MasterMinds 2025: MasterMinds is an exclusive, invitation-only packaging education event presented by Nosco. Focused on helping solve complex packaging challenges, the event has grown over the years, providing valuable opportunities for education, networking, and thought leadership within the printed packaging industry. The 2025 event centered on the theme of “Intelligence in Packaging,” highlighting how smart technologies, data-driven design, and sustainability are transforming the role of packaging.

Session Summary

Bloch began by illustrating how RFID technology is closing the gap between physical products and digital systems. He explained that Avery Dennison’s RFID solutions are enabling real-time tracking, improving inventory accuracy and advancing sustainability efforts. By embedding digital identities into physical items, companies are gaining end-to-end visibility across the product lifecycle.

He then introduced four strategic pillars that guide Avery Dennison’s approach to intelligent packaging: optimizing labor and supply chain efficiency, reducing waste, advancing sustainability and circularity, and enhancing consumer communication. These pillars are supported by a global infrastructure of manufacturing sites, research centers and service bureaus, which allow for scalable implementation.

To bring these strategies to life, Bloch shared examples of emerging applications. He highlighted dual-frequency RFID for healthcare, printed electronics for battery-free sensors and passive Bluetooth for automated data capture. These innovations are expanding the capabilities of smart packaging while reducing complexity. He also noted that Walmart is broadening its use of RFID across departments, particularly in health and beauty, to improve inventory visibility and reduce shrinkage.

Key Insights

  • Intelligent labels enable real-time tracking, authentication and data collection, creating a digital identity for each product.
  • Innovations such as printed electronics and passive Bluetooth are expanding the capabilities of smart packaging without requiring batteries.
  • Walmart is expanding RFID use to improve inventory visibility and reduce labor costs in health and beauty categories.
