The benefits of Combination Packaging don’t end yet. Our last entry talked about what the benefits of Combination Packaging mean for your business such as reducing inventory and machine downtime. Additional benefits include the following:

What is the cost of inbound QA events? How does $0 sound?! Savings are realized with respect to the time and documentation involved in typical multiple component sampling and inspection.

Combination packaging also reduces component reconciliation errors

Reconciliation is time consuming and complex! Combination packaging helps eliminate steps and the time to reconcile.

What are your options for Combination Packaging?

•Folding Carton & Attached Literature: Combining your literature (glued inserts) with your folding carton on (typically) the inside of the carton before you receive them. You receive one combined component. An additional benefit is that the insert is positioned inside the carton to make access to it easier for your customer.

• 5th panel cartons: Allows the insert to be attached inside of the folding carton and the insert can be accessed without the product chamber being touched.

•Multi-panel labels: Can be attached to folding cartons to allow for multiple language information to be provided either inside or outside of the carton.

•Fix a Form labels: Can sometimes provide enough copy space to be able to eliminate the folding carton by combining both the insert and the label.

Finally, it’s important that additional process controls over and above those required in the cGMP’s are integrated into the process at your supplier to ensure combination packaging is properly controlled and maintained.

Please leave a comment if you’d like to be contacted. One of our Package Engineers can take you through a step by step cost-savings calculator based on your commodities.

In our last entry we talked about the benefits of Combination Packaging, but what does it mean for your business? What does it mean to reduce downtime or maximize floor space? How can you actually reduce make-ready time and SKUs? Here are the details:

Machine downtime is frustrating and expensive!

By pre-attaching inserts to cartons:

You issue one component to your lines, instead of two

No need to set-up or run an insert feeder, which prevents insert trays from falling on the floor or into the machine, insert feeder jams, glue nozzle cleaning or replacing, and no more slowing down your lines so that insert feeder operators can keep up with the production rate.

You’ll also increase production throughput since inserts don’t have to be attached or inserted within your production process. Insert feeder bottlenecks, jamming and breakdowns don’t occur since the insert feeder is not running. Inserts attached to cartons don’t interfere with normal production speeds.

Next, let’s consider the cost of holding inventory

With Combination Packaging, components are shipped to you already attached together to reduce space and eliminate individual part replenishment and ordering. Having components already attached reduces complexity in storage, handling, issuance and inventory control.

Additionally, your floor space is prime real estate. Pre-attaching inserts to cartons means you don’t inventory both carton and insert pallets. On the production floor, one pallet of cartons with already attached inserts is issued and takes up less space.

Many hours can be spent properly setting up an insert feeder

By combining package components, set up time is eliminated. You will also save on machine capital and yearly maintenance costs.

Finally, it’s important that additional process controls over and above those required in the cGMP’s are integrated into the process at your supplier to ensure combination packaging is properly controlled and maintained.

Next month, we’ll cover how to reduce your cost of inbound QA events to $0! Stay tuned…

We all try to find ways to be more efficient; why not make it a resolution for 2012? Here are some easy ways to save time and money with Combination Packaging.

What is Combination Packaging anyway? Combination Packaging is printed packaging that is attached together into one component by your supplier so that you don’t have to take the time to handle or combine multiple components on your packaging line.

One example of combination packaging is folding cartons and inserts attached together. You receive folding cartons with inserts attached to the inside of the carton ready for filling with your product.

Some of the benefits for you include: REDUCED downtime, INCREASED production throughput, REDUCED inventory, MAXIMIZED floor space, REDUCED make ready time, REDUCED number of SKUs, REDUCED incoming Quality Assurance time and REDUCED reconciliation concerns….just to name a few.
